How to Smoke Wax Without a Rig

How to Enjoy Wax Without a Rig: A Fun Guide

Smoking wax can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. It provides a powerful high that lasts for quite some time. Of course, it’s not recommended if you have important tasks like flying a jet or performing open-heart surgery later in the day. But if you’re new to dabs or if your favorite glass piece met an untimely end, you might wonder how to enjoy dabs without a rig. Read on to discover everything you need to know about smoking dabs without a rig.

1. Drop it in a bowl

To enjoy wax using a bowl – whether it’s a bong, bubbler, or spoon – first pack the bowl half-full with flower. Then, use a metal dabber to collect a dab of wax and drop it onto the weed. Finally, pack the rest of the bowl. The idea behind this method is to let the cherry burn the wax without completely igniting it, ensuring that you don’t degrade the quality or incinerate the THC. This simple method only requires good wax, decent weed, and a reliable bowl.

2. Roll it in a joint

For this method, you’ll need wax, weed, rolling papers, and a crutch. Lay out your rolling paper and crutch, and spread some flower on the paper as you would with a regular joint. Next, dab some wax onto the weed. Depending on the type of concentrate you’re using, you can either break crumble or shatter into pieces and sprinkle it inside the joint or roll the extract into a thin snake-like piece and place it in the middle. Don’t forget to wash your hands after handling the concentrate and before rolling the joint! Although rolling a joint with wax can be challenging, being cautious and careful will help you get the job done.

3. Load it into a vape pen

Vaping dabs is another option. To use a vape pen, you’ll need a battery and a cartridge. Dispensaries sell all-in-one cartridges that include a mouthpiece and atomizer. Simply screw the cartridge into the battery and take a hit. If you prefer to vape your own wax instead of using a pre-filled cartridge, you’ll need a pen with a detachable atomizer. To load your own wax, gather a small dab on a metal dabber, disconnect the atomizer from the battery chamber, and dab the wax onto the unheated coil. Turn on the battery chamber, connect the atomizer, attach the mouthpiece, press the button, and draw slowly.

4. Use a healthstone

A healthstone is a unique type of glass with a porous consistency similar to volcanic rock, designed for smoking wax with a standard bong or pipe. Place the stone in the bowl area of the pipe, either inside the bowl itself or in the bottom part of a titanium nail. The goal is to position the healthstone so that all smoke is channeled through the mouthpiece. You can easily find small round healthstones online. Put some wax on top of the healthstone, superheat the insert with a butane torch, and then take a hit as you would with an oil rig. Remember to take small sips rather than large rips, as wax hits are best enjoyed in moderation.

5. Transform Your Bong into a Dab Rig

Whether you’re without a dab rig due to an unfortunate accident or considering investing in your first one, you can repurpose your bong into a makeshift dab rig when times are tough. Sadly, a huge bong won’t provide an appropriate dab hit. Anything over 15 inches can be too long for the vapor to travel upward in a single breath. Instead, opt for a small bong for dabs.

All you need is a dab nail with the right-sized ground joint. As many bongs have female joints, you’ll need to buy a male-jointed dab nail that fits. If you have a female-jointed dab nail, invest in a male-to-male adapter for the perfect fit. Universal dab nails also offer both male and female functionality.

Avoid using bongs with percolators, as they can filter your terpenes and reduce the overall flavor and aroma of your extract. You’ll still need a torch, carb cap, and dabber to dab effectively, but using a bong can be a short-term solution if you’re craving some potent concentrate.

6. Hot Knives

This is the simplest way to enjoy wax, and everyone has the necessary tools. It’s perfect for late nights when you don’t have access to a torch, vape pen, or anything else that can easily smoke hash oil.

Heat a butter knife with your stove (gas or electric) and dab some wax onto it. The wax will immediately vaporize, and you should inhale the smoke. However, this can be wasteful, as the smoke quickly dissipates in the open air. Solve this by inhaling the smoke through a straw, funnel, or the top half of a plastic soda bottle.

7. Turn Them into Edibles

If you don’t have a dab rig but want to enjoy your dabs, why not cook them into edibles? You won’t get the instant hit from smoking wax, but you’ll experience a longer-lasting and stronger high after eating the edible.

Search for cannabis edible recipes and substitute cannabis flower for concentrate. You’ll use much less concentrate material, as concentrates have a higher THC percentage by weight.

First, decarboxylate your cannabis concentrates to convert THCa into THC. Cook butter or oil with the concentrate to mix the cannabinoids with the fats. Once the oil is infused, use it in any meal or drink for a satisfying treat and high.

8. Electric Car Lighter (not recommended)

If you’re truly desperate and stuck somewhere with nothing but a car lighter and a car, you might try this dangerous method (though we don’t recommend it). Heat the lighter until it’s red hot, place the top half of a plastic bottle over the lighter, dab some wax onto the hot coil, and inhale the smoke through the bottle.

This method is easy but also risky, as you must hold the lighter in your bare hand while maneuvering a dabber and plastic bottle (and sitting in a car). It’s a recipe for burns, but if it’s all you’ve got…

9. Aluminum Foil (not recommended)

Aluminum foil is an extremely crude material for making a makeshift dab pipe for smoking wax and other concentrates. While you can get high by fashioning aluminum foil into a poor man’s dab rig, the piece won’t look great, and you might seem desperate. Not to mention the potential health implications of putting a flame to the foil. Instead, save up for a quality dabbing unit or try any of the dabbing methods listed above.
